Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

All is in the title, i know those are quite expensive in Hong Kong because of a lot of demand, but still, for people living in mainland China, this is the best peering we can obtain smile

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

Indeed most Hong-Kong servers are expensive and have ridiculously low international bandwidth quotas.
But we have found a host with unmetered bandwidth and we will try it soon.

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

That's great news ! It would change a lot of things for China mainland users !!! Actually, since the beginning, the QOS applied on your services are random, sometimes it's a particular server that is the faster, sometimes it changes, currently, UK LT2P with P2P openvpn are the fastest, Germany and France are nearly not usable at all anymore, Ukraine used to be good, but not anymore, Dedicated is also nearly non usable, US server is slow, but for some services it's needed to have US geo localisation, that's why i'm using it for web, although there are big troubles with google search on that server ... Request are simply denied ... That's for the feedback i can give you at the moment.
I was wondering if you were interested in regular feedback coming from this region of the world from the user point of view ?

Feedback is always appreciated.
But feedback on bandwidth with servers located far away is probably useless since there is nothing we will be able to do about it.

At the moment it seems that the best location to get good connectivity to Asian countries for an acceptable price is USA west coast, and that's where our US server is.

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

The new US server worked pretty well until recently, maybe a few days ago, since then, bandwith is again low, with the new restrictions in China, they have "intelligent" firewalls that can learn, i guess that this server finally got spotted, usually what happens when pptp connections get spotted, they fall under the foreign connection qos, means at best, 60 to 70 KB/S, enough to surf, too slow to stream/download.

I read a lot about stealth openvpn servers, any plan on this ?

Since last month ? or more recently ? https://arethusa.co/forum/viewtopic.php?id=724

If I have understood correctly, a stealth openvpn server is openvpn + stunnel.
It's very easy to setup.
Just one question: which port number would be the best ?
a vpn provider uses 8292, another provider uses 110 and 443
We already use 443 for regular openvpn. Port numbers for mail applications, like 110, seem to be a good idea.

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

Problems i did encounter on bandwith with US server seems to be gone, probably just a ramdom problem somewhere on the route, impossible to identify. The location change for the US server did a lot of good, speed is actually very good, and the ping isn't bad either. Very pleasant on streaming services.

For the stealth openvpn, definitely need a port that nobody uses, best way to avoid it to be easily detected, i guess 110 can be a try, but all this is more about test check and see, than anything else anyway.
If you need some testing, i have a windows 8 64 and a Fedora 18 available to test everything, would be happy to help determining what work the best.

Edit:  found this guide that looks pretty straight forward, indeed very easy to setup

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

I have setup stunnel on port 110 on the US server.
Connection works as indicated at the end of this page https://syria.hacktivist.me/?p=161

Connection works for me. Speed is not great, but still usable.
I'm going to do some tests to see if it can be improved.

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

Ok, i did apply the configuration. it does work perfectly, speed is ok from China, i only have 500KB/sec anyway. Everything went smoothly, easy as hell to setup smile, and real pleasant to be able to use openvpn again smile
Don't know if you allow your server's ip to be posted, so i'll remove those from the logs, but here they are :

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

Update:
There is a small problem with the instructions provided by hacktivist.me: the tunnel disconnects after some time and is unable to reconnect.
To fix this, the following line should be added to the OpenVPN configuration file:

route XXXXXXX.net 255.255.255.255 net_gateway

XXXXXXX.net being the server address.

If the server has several IP addresses, you should pick one of these IP addresses and use it everywhere in place of the server name, to avoid problems.
The US server has one IP address and it's the only server with stunnel, so that's not an issue at the moment.

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

Well, i applied the modification, running fine, as you said earlier, speed is not as great as other protocols, but the loss isn't that big, over the 520K i have here, i'm down to  around 470, but secure and stable connection at that speed, that's a price i'm ready to pay wink
Once again, thanks all for your efforts providing us  high quality services smile

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

Feedback after one month of usage, this is truly a life saver, stunnel+openvpn just works perfect, any plan to add this on some other servers ? Having this functionnal on p2p server could be nice.

Yes stunnel will be added to other servers in the future. At least on europe and p2p.

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

Any news regarding other servers ? US is fine in term of speed, but always using the same server seems risky regarding Chinese great firewall evolution ...
I would definitely love seeing servers such as p2p and fr-dedi getting this functional aswel.

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

stunnel will be added to the p2p servers after some cleanup.
But you can also use the fr server for p2p if you're connecting from China.

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

stunnel has been added to the NL* servers. These servers are ok for p2p.
Use the address of the NL server to connect.

Re: Any plan for a Hong Kong based server ?

Thank you for adding NL to the list, not really stable from China for large downloads, but it's still nice to have a p2p capable stunnel vpn available smile
So far, US is still the best location to access western web from China. Also allows me to trick google play on my phone smile
Actually, with this server being working quite well, HK server isn't that needed anymore if you don't play, i guess that some players might want to have a better ping, and only way here is a HK server, but with the cost of a link over there, i'm not sure it's worth it, and due to the real low price you give us, i don't really see how the cost of such a server could fit in that.
Once again, really wanted to thank you for everything you did on the multi-protocol support, it really gives travelers a lot of flexibility !
