Problem with German server

I've not been able to connect to the German server since mid day on Wednesday.  I've not changed anything in my configuration files and I van connect to the other servers without any problem.  Here's what my OpenVPN log shows -

Thu Sep 13 09:12:18 2012 LZO compression initialized
Thu Sep 13 09:12:18 2012 Control Channel MTU parms [ L:1558 D:138 EF:38 EB:0 ET:0 EL:0 ]

Thu Sep 13 09:12:18 2012 Data Channel MTU parms [ L:1558 D:1450 EF:58 EB:135 ET:0 EL:0 AF:3/1 ]
Thu Sep 13 09:12:18 2012 Local Options hash (VER=V4): '22188c5b'
Thu Sep 13 09:12:18 2012 Expected Remote Options hash (VER=V4): 'a8f55717'
Thu Sep 13 09:12:18 2012 UDPv4 link local: [undef]
Thu Sep 13 09:12:18 2012 UDPv4 link remote: 89.149.244.11:443

Is it something that I'm doing wrong, or is there a problem with the server?   Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Problem with German server

I see no problem with the server.

You should check the firewall settings of your PC and your router.

Re: Problem with German server

Hmmm.  I'm at a bit of a loss to fix this problem.  I'd appreciate your help.

There's nothing in my PC or router firewall that would prevent connection to the German server.  I been connecting to the server for months before now without any problem and I haven't changed anything in my OpenVPN settings or in my firewall.  I can still connect to all the other servers (I'm using the UA server at this moment).

Here is the OpenVPN configuration file that I'm using.  Can you see any obvious problem with it?  It's certainly been ok up until now and it's working at this moment for connection to the UA server (with <<remote de.tunsrv.s6n.net 443>> changed to <<remote ua.tunsrv.s6n.net 443>> of course).

Can you type this command in a command prompt and paste the result here ?

Re: Problem with German server

This is probably related to this problem: https://arethusa.co/forum/viewtopic.php?id=653

Have you tried with OpenVPN TCP ?

I assume that to do this I should simply put <<proto tcp>> into the OpenVPN configuration file instead of <<proto udp>>.   If I do this, I still have the same problem to connect to the German server.  I can connect to any of the other servers with either udp or tcp in the configuration file.

Re: Problem with German server

Ok. Thank you for your tests.

So this is a network problem at Orange.
The only thing we can do is wait for Orange to fix their problems.

Re: Problem with German server

Ok, thanks for your help.  I wonder if Orange know that they have a problem.  Maybe it suits them to effectively block access to a VPN provider !

Re: Problem with German server

Update.   The problem at Orange is fixed, it seems.  Now I can connect to the German server.

Re: Problem with German server

Sadly, the fix did not have a long life.  Today there is no connection to the German server.

Re: Problem with German server

Yes, it's working now.  I guess that Orange must have taken some action.

Let's hope that this time the fix lasts more than a few hours.

Re: Problem with German server

The German server still seems to be sporadically unreliable.  Most times there is no problem to connect, but once or twice a week there are periods when an existing connection will suddenly drop-out or it will be impossible to make a connection.   Does anyone else have this?

Am I really the only person with this problem?   I was connected to the German server just a moment ago, looking at a web page, and suddenly my connection was lost.   It was not possible to connect again to the German server, but all of the other servers were fine.  My past experience tells me that it will be several hours before I can connect again to the German server.

Re: Problem with German server

The situation with the German server seems to be completely crazy.   The problem with intermittent connections has escalated to the point where every day it is impossible to connect to the server from late afternoon  until early the following morning.   Any connection that is already made is terminated.

The openVPN log always includes this entry when the connection problem exists –

Mon Oct 15 19:38:38 2012 TEST ROUTES: 0/0 succeeded len=0 ret=0 a=0 u/d=down
Mon Oct 15 19:38:38 2012 Route: Waiting for TUN/TAP interface to come up...

Any suggestions about the likely cause?   I don’t believe that it results from a problem with my own openVPN configuration because there is no problem with any of the other servers.

That indicates a Windows problem, probably caused by a firewall or "security" software installed on the computer.

Thanks for the suggestion.   I have Kaspersky anti-virus and I use the Windows firewall.  With both disabled the problem persists.  I don't have any other kind of security software in operation.  Perhaps my nat router could be responsible, but if it was it would also affect the other Arethusa servers, wouldn't it?

Re: Problem with German server

According to the log, it's a software problem on the computer, not on a router.

Re: Problem with German server

OK, thanks.   It’s a tough one to understand because it only happens with the German server and only during the afternoon and evening.   I’ll try a fresh install of Windows in a virtual box and load software until something triggers the problem.
